United Nations Humanitarian Fund approves $1.7 million to support Vanuatu’s recovery after two Cat 4 hurricanes
Recently, the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) approved US$1.7 million for Vanuatu to help recover the country from the severe impact of two Category 4 cyclones, Judy and Kevin. The Government of Vanuatu has confirmed that funding is specifically targeted at food security, water and sanitation (WASH) hygiene and emergency shelter to support the most vulnerable and impacted populations in Vanuatu.
This news was announced during the Pacific Humanitarian Team (PHT) meeting co-hosted by the Government of Vanuatu and the UN, which was attended by over 150 people including ambassadors and representatives from 37 countries and around 40 organizations.
“The Vanuatu government has shown first class leadership in its response efforts. It is critical that we come together today and decide how we can continue this excellent teamwork and collaboration in response to the twin cyclones that have hit Vanuatu,” said Sanaka Samarasinha, UN resident coordinator for Vanuatu, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu, who chaired the PHT with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vanuatu, Hon. Jotham Napat.
Mr Napat added that support for Vanuatu’s recovery efforts was overwhelming and that Vanuatu was still in a “time of need”.
“Both hurricanes left massive trails of destruction in their wake, causing severe damage to infrastructure, buildings, communications and crops. They struck at a time when Vanuatu was still recovering from the effects of Tropical Cyclone Harold,” the Hon. Napat said.
The meeting between the Government of Vanuatu and the Pacific Humanitarian Team (PHT) provided an important opportunity to discuss the government’s immediate and long-term priority needs, as well as to assess damage and develop response and priority plans. Minister Napat stressed that the Vanuatu government will now prepare a response plan, followed by a plan for the recovery phase.
“We really want to rebuild better – more resilient people and a more resilient nation, especially if the prognosis for future disasters remains high,” Minister Napat added.
The $1.7 million grant from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) enables rapid humanitarian response to those most affected and is an effective way to provide humanitarian assistance in crisis situations, particularly natural disasters and armed conflict.
