The Albanian government plans to turn 27 acres of land in eastern Tirana into a microstate called the Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order, which will have its own borders, passports and administration.

Albania is facing a stunning transformation in the Bektashi Muslim community, the Bektashi order, whose headquarters are in the country’s capital Tirana.

The plan is to turn the tiny region into its own sovereign state, smaller than Vatican City, with a focus on tolerance.

That means alcohol is allowed, everyone can wear what they want and lifestyle regulations are rejected – a hugely progressive step compared to some other Islamic states.

The small, ten-hectare piece of land would have all the hallmarks of an independent country: its own government, its own passport and its own borders.

About half of Albanians identify as Muslims, and about 10 percent of citizens are Bektashi.

Bektashi is considered a tolerant version of Islam, in which moderate alcohol consumption is permitted and men and women have more equal rights.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama had proposed establishing a separate Bektashi state. He found the support of religious leader Baba Mondi.

The latter, who could preside over the microstate in the same way as the Pope does in the Vatican, called the move an “extraordinary initiative.”

He added: “For our followers, this is not about political power or land acquisition; it is about consolidating the Bektashi order’s mission of spiritual moderation and protecting our religious practices.”

“Albania has always been a beacon of religious coexistence and this move is a testament to the forward-looking nature of the Albanian government under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has recognized the importance of giving us the space to continue promoting peace.

A statement from the Bektashi order said: “The Bektashi order, known for its message of peace, tolerance and religious harmony, will gain sovereignty comparable to that of the Vatican, allowing us to govern autonomously from a religious and administrative point of view.”

Speaking to the United Nations on Sunday, Rama said this would strengthen Albania’s reputation as a tolerant nation.

He pointed out that in recent times it had helped innocent Afghans escape the Taliban monsters.

Rama said the country’s proud history – which includes giving the world Mother Teresa – had served as the inspiration for a special Bektashi state.

He said: “She told us that not all of us can do great things, but we can all do small things with great love.

“This is our inspiration as we support the transformation of the World Bektashi Order into a sovereign state in our capital Tirana, as a new center of moderation, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.”
