Demonstrations in Bulgaria against the introduction of the Euro’s

Last Saturday, protests against the planned introduction of the Euro as the national currency took place in several Bulgarian cities. These demonstrations were documented by the Bulgarian News Agency.

Vazrashdane party calls for resignation
Kostadin Kostadinov, chairman of the Vazrashdane (Rebirth) party, used the opportunity to demand the resignation of the current government. Speaking to journalists in front of the Bulgarian National Bank building in Sofia, he emphasized that there was only one message: “Resignation. The resignation of this government so that we can save Bulgaria, so that we can save the Bulgarian Lev.”

Kostadinov also claimed that the Eurozone was on the verge of collapse. He compared the situation to a ship on its way to the bottom. “France, the second-largest economy, is technically bankrupt. Germany is in recession, and Italy is experiencing both stagnation and inflation. The first, second, and third-largest economies in the Eurozone are currently collapsing before our very eyes. We are boarding the Titanic.”

Further Criticisms and Slogans

In addition to the introduction of the euro, Kostadinov cited other reasons for his demand for the government’s resignation. These include a substantial budget deficit of over 6.5 billion leva (approximately 3.3 billion euros), high inflation rates, and widespread corruption. “There aren’t just one or two reasons for this government’s resignation; there are hundreds,” he declared.

The protests, organized by “Vazrashdane” in other cities such as Shumen, Pleven, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, and Ruse, demonstrated the population’s discontent. Demonstrators carried placards with slogans such as “Freedom for the Lev” and “The Mafia’s Introduction of the Euro Will Bankrupt Bulgaria.” Petition drives were held to preserve the Bulgarian Lev.

Recurring Protests and Fears

The demonstrations last weekend were not the first of their kind. Similar nationwide protests, during which major intersections were blocked, took place in May of this year. The demonstrators expressed fears that the switch to the Euro could lead to an increase in the cost of living and compromise the country’s economic sovereignty. For this reason, they called on the government to hold a national referendum on the currency change.
