Digital Identities: The Ultimate Control in Europe?

Digital Identities: The Ultimate Control in Europe?

The introduction of digital identities is a much-discussed topic. Critics see this as a serious threat to freedom and prosperity. They argue that digital identities represent an all-encompassing control tool that could be used by governments and companies to monitor and control citizens.

C40 cities as pioneers

The C40 cities are an example of the implementation of digital identities. This association of 97 cities from all over the world has set itself the goal, among other things, of creating a more sustainable future by 2030. This also includes measures to reduce meat consumption, textile consumption and transport.

Critics fear that these measures could lead to citizens being increasingly restricted in their everyday lives. For example, you could be required to identify yourself with your digital identity in order to receive certain products or services.

Bill Gates and the Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP)

One of the key players in the development of digital identities is Bill Gates. The Gates Foundation supports, among other things, the Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP). This platform aims to help governments create digital identities for their citizens.

MOSIP is an open source platform, meaning it can be used by any government for free. However, the Gates Foundation is also the main sponsor of the platform. Critics fear that Gates could use the platform to pursue his own agenda.

ID2020 and the digital vaccination certificate

Another organization working on digital identities is ID2020. This organization was founded by the Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.

ID2020 has developed guidelines for digital vaccination passports for the WHO. This guide is the basis for the Digital Identity for EU Citizens project.

The electronic patient file in the EU

The electronic patient record (ePA) is another example of a digital identity. The ePA is an electronic collection of health data that is maintained by a doctor.

In Germany you can object to the ePA. However, EU law takes precedence over national law. It is therefore possible that patients’ right to object to the ePA will no longer apply in the relevant EU law.

If you live in a district where there is a lot of unhealthy consumption -> this will affect your life insurance / pension / death insurance etc. Currently, insurance companies already check the liquidity of ALL customers, but this is still pretty old-fashioned. With the coming technological advances (digital ID, digital currency), insurance companies will be able to monitor liquidity in real time via interfaces with banks/credit institutions/etc. as well as the tax situation of each customer.

The introduction of digital identities is a complex process with far-reaching consequences. It is important to find out about the opportunities and risks of digital identities before deciding for or against them.
