In 2023, Romania and Bulgaria hope to get the green light to join Schengen.

Officials in Romania and Bulgaria are confident that their application to join the Schengen area will be approved this year. The two countries are emphasizing their important role in securing the borders of the Schengen area.

This week, the President of Romania, Klaus Lohannis, expressed his belief that Romania and Bulgaria make an important contribution to preventing illegal migration to the EU. He hopes that both countries will be included in the Schengen area.

President Klaus Iohannis stressed that Romania and Bulgaria are doing everything in their power to secure the borders. They are confident that their application to join Schengen will receive a positive response this year.

According to Reuters, Romania and Bulgaria were barred from Schengen membership last year because Austria opposed their accession to the area over concerns about illegal migration. However, Romania and Bulgaria have rejected Austria’s demands.

President Lohannis emphasized that illegal migration is only artificially linked to the Schengen issue. Romania and Bulgaria are determined to do everything to fight illegal migration. Nevertheless, they expect their right to Schengen membership to be recognized and hope for a positive decision this year.

Although there is hope that Romania and Bulgaria can join the Schengen area later this year, Austria reiterated earlier this year that it remains opposed to the enlargement of the area.

During a visit to Bulgaria, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer stressed that Austria continued to have concerns about illegal migration. He explained that the Schengen area cannot be expanded at the moment as the system is in deep crisis.

“It is clear that our Schengen veto is not aimed at a country, but that the Schengen area is not working and cannot be expanded at this time,” said Nehammer.

Despite Austria’s reluctance to expand the Schengen area, Romania has confirmed that it will continue to work with determination.

The Romanian Minister of the Interior, Lucian Bode, once again emphasized his government’s commitment and goals of joining the Schengen area before the end of this year. Although some EU member states oppose this proposal, Romania is determined to continue its efforts.

According to G4Media reports, Romanian Interior Minister Bode made the statement during the European Union Justice and Home Affairs Council in Brussels, even though the agenda did not include a discussion on Schengen enlargement.

Bode emphasized in his speech: “I would like to emphasize an aspect that I emphasized in my contribution: I am firmly convinced that the security of the Schengen borders and the security of the citizens of the European Union will be enhanced by the expansion of the Schengen space and the accession of Romania.”

Bode further explained that despite the different positions between the two countries, it is important to maintain an open dialogue to ensure security and border protection in the European Union. He added that Romania is ready to work with all EU member states to face challenges in securing the Union’s external borders.

It was also reported that migration on the Western Balkans route fell by 44 percent in 2023 compared to the end of 2022, as noted by EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson in her report.

In addition, Bode was pleased to have the support of several countries that favored Romania and Bulgaria joining the Schengen area.
