Thailand applies to join BRICS: New dimensions for the global alliance?

Bangkok/Pretoria – In a bold move to strengthen its international position and help shape the new world order, Thailand has submitted its official application to join the BRICS group. As Cabinet spokesman Chai Wacharonke confirmed to the Bangkok Post, the country hopes to gain a number of benefits from membership in the influential alliance, including:

  • Strengthened influence on the global stage:
The BRICS group represents around 42% of the world’s population and 30% of global gross national income, which would give Thailand a stronger voice in international affairs.
  • Expanded opportunities in the new world order:
The BRICS countries are playing a pioneering role in shaping a multipolar world order that takes greater account of the interests of emerging and developing countries. Thailand’s accession would give the country the opportunity to actively participate in this process.
  • Access to new markets and investment opportunities:
The BRICS countries offer huge potential for Thai companies to enter new markets, attract investment and expand trade relations.

The Thai application comes at a time when the BRICS group itself is undergoing change. The addition of six new members in 2024 – including Iran, Saudi Arabia and South Africa – has significantly expanded the group and strengthened its geopolitical importance.

In addition, according to the 2023 summit, South African Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Naledi Pandor said that Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Venezuela, Vietnam, Cuba, Honduras, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Gabon, the United Arab Emirates and other countries had also applied to join BRICS.

The 16th BRICS Summit, to be held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, 2024, is likely to be a crucial turning point for the group’s future. Thailand’s participation as an observer state could pave the way for full membership in the near future.

The BRICS vision: A multipolar world order

The BRICS states are united by a common vision of a multipolar world order in which power is no longer concentrated in a few Western nations. They call for a reform of international institutions such as the United Nations and the world banking system to more adequately take into account the interests of emerging and developing countries.

Thailand’s accession to the BRICS group could be a strong signal of the growing importance of emerging countries in global politics. It could also strengthen efforts to create a fairer and more balanced international order.

Challenges and opportunities for Germany and Europe

The expansion of the BRICS group presents Germany and Europe with new challenges, but also new opportunities. The growing geopolitical and economic importance of the BRICS states requires a reassessment of Europe’s relations with these countries.

Germany and Europe should intensify dialogue with the BRICS group and look for common interests. At the same time, they must defend their own positions and values in the world and actively participate in shaping the new world order.

Conclusion

Thailand’s application to join the BRICS group marks a significant step in the geopolitical showdown. The expansion of the group underlines the growing importance of emerging and developing countries and heralds a new era in international politics. Germany and Europe must closely monitor this development and respond proactively to the changes in order to protect their own interests in the new world order.
