Your Path to Polish Citizenship: A Journey with TCME Group Worldwide

Do you dream of becoming a part of the Polish nation, whether for family reasons, a longing for your ancestors’ roots, or a fascination with Poland’s rich history and culture? Obtaining Polish citizenship can be a profound step, offering you not only a stronger connection to this captivating country but also numerous benefits within the European Union. At TCME Group Worldwide, we understand the complexities of this process and are here to support you with our expertise, making this journey as smooth and successful as possible.
The Polish Citizenship Act (Journal of Laws of 2023, item 1989) outlines various avenues to Polish citizenship. Each path has its unique requirements, and at TCME Group Worldwide, we help you identify and navigate the most suitable one for your situation.
Avenues to Polish Citizenship: An Overview
Essentially, there are three main procedures for obtaining Polish citizenship:
Confirmation of Possession of Polish Citizenship (Citizenship by Descent): This procedure, often referred to as “Polish citizenship by descent,” is the most relevant path for many of our clients. A decision is made by the Voivode (the regional governor) responsible for the person’s current or last place of residence in Poland. The core of this process is proving that you inherited citizenship from your Polish ancestors.
Recognition as a Polish Citizen: In this case, too, the competent Voivode makes the decision. This procedure is applicable to individuals who meet certain criteria, such as having lived legally in Poland for an extended period and having integrated into Polish society.
Granting of Polish Citizenship / Citizenship by exception: This is a prerogative of the President of the Republic of Poland and represents the ultimate path to citizenship. It is often granted for special reasons or in the interest of the Polish state.
All of these procedures are generally initiated upon application by the foreign national. For minors, legal guardians submit the application. Interestingly, the confirmation of possession of Polish citizenship can also be initiated at the request of an entity demonstrating a legal interest or obligation to obtain the relevant decision, or it can even be initiated ex officio.
Confirmation of Polish Citizenship by Descent
A significant part of our work at TCME Group Worldwide focuses on the confirmation of possession of Polish citizenship. This procedure is based on the principle of jus sanguinis (right of blood), meaning that citizenship is primarily acquired from one’s parents. It’s a fascinating process that often requires a journey through your family history.
In essence, you must prove that your ancestors (up to the second degree, meaning parents or grandparents) possessed or still possess Polish citizenship, and that no events occurred in their lives or yours that would have led to the loss of this citizenship. It’s about demonstrating an unbroken chain of Polish citizenship across generations. The auxiliary principle of jus soli (right of soil) – i.e., acquiring citizenship by place of birth – plays a subordinate role here and is only applied in very specific exceptional cases, such as for foundlings or individuals whose citizenship is unclear.
Your Family History as Key: What Documents Are Crucial?
Proving your Polish roots often requires detective work and a careful compilation of documents. At TCME Group Worldwide, we provide comprehensive support in this research. The following information and documents can be particularly helpful:
The date of emigration of your ancestors from Poland to another country: The year 1920 is a significant milestone here, as the first Polish Citizenship Act came into force in that year. The emigration date can shed light on the laws governing your ancestors’ citizenship.
Birth dates of your parents/grandparents, their marriage dates, and, if applicable, the dates of acquisition of Polish citizenship as a second citizenship (after 1951): These personal details are essential for tracing the family connection.
Documents that can confirm the Polish citizenship of your parents or grandparents: These include old passports, identity cards, military IDs, birth, and/or marriage certificates. Any document proving a connection to Poland or the Polish citizenship of your ancestors is invaluable.
Documents proving your connection to family members whose records are submitted as part of the application process: This can be anything from family photos to correspondence that establishes the link to the individuals whose documents you are submitting.
Should the above documents not be readily available, there’s no need to despair! TCME Group Worldwide has the knowledge and experience to help you utilize various state archives, the Central Military Archive, or relevant online databases. In-depth genealogical research, even in archives outside Poland’s current borders, can often bring hidden treasures to light. Think of voter lists, civil registry archives of the eastern border regions, permanent registration records, church records, morality certificates for individuals who obtained a Polish passport for immigration purposes, and more.
Your Responsibility and Our Support: Success Together
Since 2009, the responsibility for obtaining all necessary documents and proving the Polish origin of your parents and/or grandparents lies with the applicant. However, the Polish Citizenship Act provides an important exception: “unless obtaining these documents encounters insurmountable obstacles” (Article 56, Paragraph 2 of the Polish Citizenship Act). Should such objective difficulties arise, the Voivodship Office will undertake the archival research.
Our recommendation at TCME Group Worldwide is clear: submit all documents related to your parents and/or grandparents, even those that may seem irrelevant at first glance. Experts know that even small details, such as a note about the citizenship of your grandparents’ siblings, can provide the desired information. It is better to submit “everything possible” than to overlook something important. We will assist you in reviewing and evaluating your documents.
Another significant advantage of this procedure is its flexibility: you do not need to be physically present in Poland when submitting the application! The application can be conveniently submitted through the Polish consul responsible for your place of residence, who is obligated to forward it (along with supporting documents) without delay to the competent Voivode. Furthermore, there is no requirement that a person applying for confirmation of Polish citizenship must have ever lived in Poland, nor is knowledge of the Polish language required. In this sense, the procedure is relatively “liberal” (provided the application is properly documented).
Since 1951, dual citizenship has been possible in Poland. This means you can obtain Polish citizenship while retaining the citizenship of another country. This option offers you maximum freedom and significantly expands your perspectives.
